How to Choose the Right Pillow Height
The right pillow helps keep your head and neck aligned with the rest of your spine in your usual sleep position.

- Choose pillow height around your sleep position and shoulder width.
- Your neck should feel neutral—not pushed upward or allowed to drop.
- Persistent pain, weakness, numbness or headaches should be evaluated by a qualified clinician.
Start with neutral alignment
A useful pillow fills the space between your head and the mattress while keeping your neck close to neutral. Too much or too little loft can leave the neck bent for hours.
Side sleepers usually need more loft to account for shoulder width. Back sleepers often need moderate support. Stomach sleepers generally need a thinner pillow, though that position can still strain the neck.
Height and firmness work together
A pillow's listed height is only part of the story. Soft fill compresses more under the head, while dense foam or latex holds more of its original loft. Judge the height after you settle into your normal position.
Use a simple home fit check
Ask someone to look at your head and neck from behind while you lie in your usual position. Your nose, chin and breastbone should appear comfortably aligned rather than tilted.
Give an adjustable pillow several nights, changing the fill in small amounts. A new surface or mattress topper can also change the amount of pillow loft you need.
